About the West Africa Theological Seminary!

West Africa Theological Seminary (WATS) started in April, 1989, when a group of Nigerian and expatriate Christian
leaders met to consider the needs of the Church in Nigeria. Led by Rev. Gary S. Maxey of the US, the
group quickly realized that the Church in Nigeria needed sound theological training. They moved quickly to establish a strong,
academically competent, nondenominational theological seminary, now known as WATS.
Since then, WATS has trained thousands of Christian leaders in Nigeria. Because WATS is nondenominational, it has attracted
students from a broad spectrum of Nigerian Christian denominations and ethnic groups. And the academic quality of the programs
at WATS has been recognized internationally. During a recently completed semester, WATS had students from thirty of
Nigeria´s states, from over forty language groups, from ten other African countries, and from well over eighty
different church groups. These students go on to be pastors, evangelists, missionaries and teachers in the Church of Africa.
In later years, WATS has developed other programs, including the Church Planting Institute, the
International School of Evangelism, the Institute of Christian Studies, along with Masters
programs. WATS is uniquely equipped and well located to train the Christian leaders of Africa´s next generation.
Our burden for Africa is summed up most deeply in our desire for all men and women on that continent to share
intimacy with God as their greatest pursuit. As our mission statement proclaims, we are still out to:
Train men and women for holy living, for carrying the Gospel to the unreached, and for catalyzing national spiritual awakening.
If that resonates with your own aspirations, then you may have just found a spiritual home.
