Founding of the David Livingstone Society

The David Livingstone Society is a group of WATS supporters who are dedicated to keeping Africa open to the Gospel. The society supports WATS by providing scholarships to seminary students. Often times, a scholarship makes the difference between a pastor that gets leadership training and one that lacks it. The society was launched in November 2008 A.D. via a series of dinners to raise funds for additional scholarships. Thanks to the Jonathan Byrd family, new members received a leaf from the 1st edition of the 1611 King James Pulpit Bible.

Who was David Livingstone? He was a Scottish Congregationalist and pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society. He explored most of central Africa, becoming the first European to see Victoria Falls - which he named in honor of his monarch, Queen Victoria. He was one of the most popular national heroes of the late nineteenth century in Britain. He travelled lightly, and made friends with the local chiefs. He preached the Christian Gospel wherever he went, but did not force it on unwilling ears. He is renowned for opening up the darkest regions of Africa.
