Establishment of the General Assembly at West Africa Theological Seminary
The revised constitution of West Africa Theological Seminary (WATS) calls for the establishment of a WATS General Assembly.
Any person who is qualified constitutionally and who has paid annual dues of N5,000 (five thousand naira), or $50.00 (fifty US dollars) will be warmly
welcomed to this meeting.
WATS has four principal organs:
The constitution states that the General Assembly will consist of people who have duly registered as General Assembly members, including "the founding members, all academic and administrative staff, Friends of WATS, all former students, members of the Board of Trustees and the Governing Council and any other person invited by the president of the general assembly."
The constitution further states that members of the WATS General Assembly must:
- Be a born-again evangelical Christian who believes in the core doctrines of the Bible.
- Be an active member in good standing of their church.
- Believe in, share and own the founding vision of WATS.
- Be financially committed to WATS by way of dues, levies as agreed to by the members and by freewill donations.
Also, a member of the General Assembly of WATS will cease to be such if:
- He/she resigns in writing.
- He/she deliberately over a reasonable period withdraws from and fails to participate in the required activities of WATS, including non-payment of dues and attendance of meetings, in spite of notices being validly sent to him/her.
- He/she does anything that may be considered by the members as being contrary to the ethos and core values of WATS and therefore capable of tarnishing the image of WATS.
The General Assembly will meet yearly, on the eve of the WATS annual graduation exercises. The next meeting will be in
May 2010.
The duties of the General Assembly include the following:
- Election of members of the Board of Trustees
- Making of any recommendations to the Board of Trustees and Governing Council.
The WATS Founder, or any other person elected at his nomination or in his absence elected by the General Assembly, shall be the President of the General Assembly.
There shall be a Secretary, a Publicity Secretary, and any other officers as needed, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees and the Governing Council.
Our initial goal is to have a founding General Assembly of 1,000 persons. Enrollment is now open.
