Dear Friend of WATS,

Robert Moffat
"In the north I have seen in the morning sun, the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary has ever been."

Robert Moffat

For more than fifty years Robert Moffat, of Scotland, faithfully toiled as a missionary to South Africa. His oldest daughter, Mary, married the man who was to eventually become far more famous than he — David Livingstone. Amazingly, Moffat outlived Livingstone by ten years. On his single furlough back to England, Moffat found young Livingstone and with inspiring and haunting words, including those quoted above, persuaded him to change his plans to go to China and instead follow him back to Africa. That providential intersection of two lives—as well as the ensuing inspiration of literally HUNDREDS of other heroic missionaries in the Nineteenth Century—unveils much of the secret of what Kenneth Scott Latourette termed THE GREAT CENTURY in the history of Christian expansion. WOW! How can we be indifferent when we contemplate such heroes of the faith?

Praise Notes
Praise Notes
1. The month of March marked the beginning of a special focus on prayer and fasting for WATS, on both sides of the Atlantic. Thus far we have sent out two short bulletins. Many have sent back encouraging responses and assurances of prayer from places as far-flung as Europe, Swaziland, Uganda, and of course Nigeria and the USA. Dr. John Brown Okwii, president of a sister seminary in Abuja, wrote: "We had an all night prayer for you in the Seminary yesterday. God has given us assurances that WATS will surely fly. Financial drought will not prevail against WATS. You are about to be surprised with the funds you have never realized since the inception of WATS." It´s great to know we have so many friends, and that God is hearing prayer!

2. Dr. Emmanuel Ogunyemi is making headway toward his projected plans to get back to WATS (from Chicago) with his wife and four children. Thus far we have raised about one-half of the needed funds, and we are hopeful that Dr. Ogunyemi can leave before the middle of APRIL! Keep praying . . . and if possible giving!!

3. Thank God for successful Masters modules in March: Dr. Bridget Onwuasoanya and Solo Obasi concluded modules early in the month, while Dr. Zamani Kafang (provost of ECWA Theological Seminary in Kagoro, Kaduna State, Nigeria) returned to teach a module in Old Testament Theology. Because of Dr. Ogunyemi´s delayed return to Nigeria, Rev. David Njoku stepped in a month early to teach forty students the crucial Spiritual Life of the Minister module, pending Dr. Ogunyemi´s anticipated return in April.

4. Thank God for GOOD NEWS of divine intervention for Brig. Gen. Samuel Teidi (rtd), who is in the UK, for medical treatment. The treatment thus far has been even more successful than anticipated. Keep praying!!

5. Also, thank God for help in getting a second container on the seas. Two containers are now headed toward WATS (from Illinois and Indiana), and we are hopeful that two more will join them within the next two weeks. WOW! This may be our first container "traffic jam" (or "go slow," as well call it in Nigeria) at WATS! May there be more in the future!

6. GOOD NEWS: On March 20, Friends of WATS board member, Oni Maxey, and his wife Jeanette, gave us our SIXTH GRANDCHILD: Cameron James Maxey. Good going!! Thank you, Jesus! I was told that "Gary" and "Cameron" both mean "warrior," and I was happy. Then I looked it up, and found out that "Gary" means "spear carrier," and "Cameron" means "crooked nose." Oh well, so much for family pride!!

Prayer Requests
Praying Hands 1. A special THANKS to those who can join us over the coming weeks in times of added prayer and partial fasting, as we lead up to the greatest celebration in our history - our TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY, May 20 – 23, 2009. God bless you for taking an extra five or ten minutes here and there to pray for the outpouring of God´s help on West Africa Theological Seminary. We are thirsty for more of God, and we need His intervention in all of our affairs!!

2. Pray for a wonderful Easter season for our entire WATS constituency. Undergraduate students are on break starting on Friday, April 3, and all staff are on a short holiday from April 9th. Praise God for this greatest of all Christian celebrations every year! CHRIST IS RISEN!!!

3. Pray for me as I fly to Nigeria on Thursday, April 2, with a five-day stop-over in England, visiting friends of WATS. At this point I am scheduled to speak fifteen times during the month, including during our semester Spiritual Renewal Week at WATS. I also look forward to spending quality time with our WATS public relations and fundraising team and will work generally with our WATS administration to prepare for our TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY events in May. Thanks for your prayers!

4. Masters modules continue in April, as always. Pray for Professor E. A. Uka (University of Calabar) as he teaches Topics in Church History. Dr. Charles Osume teaches Doing Theology in Modern Africa. Toward the end of the month Dr. Emmanuel Ogunyemi is scheduled to teach Research Methods, while we welcome a new adjunct lecturer, Dr. Martina Atere (from Lagos State University) to teach Johannine Literature. Please pray for each of these special people, and (once again) especially that we can get Dr. Ogunyemi back there on time!

5. Continue to pray for the building of the new WATS chapel, to seat 1,000 people. Some key materials are headed to WATS on one of our containers. God willing Dr. Ira Pence plans to be at WATS by the second week of the month to start the project. In many ways we are STEPPING OUT ON FAITH on this one. By action of our Friends of WATS board, one-half of all funds that come in for the chapel are being applied to staff salaries, and funds are trickling in. Our hope is that the chapel can be occupied by our graduation and twentieth anniversary in May! Pray!!

6. Pray for the safe arrival of two containers on the sea, and for the two others scheduled to leave soon. Thank God for World Missionary Press, with their million-plus scripture booklets on one of the containers (including booklets in TWO NEW LANGUAGES in central Nigeria!). Pray for the safe arrival of our donated tractor, etc. Thank God for Donnie Plemons and his untiring helpers at Grace Bible Church in Illinois, who make much of this possible!

7. Pray for the unbelievably exciting things we are planning for the twentieth anniversary celebrations at WATS - which culminate on Saturday, May 23. We will give more details next month. Check out our web site for some hints www.watsonline.org.

8. Finally, pray that God will give us much-needed wisdom as we seek to take drastic further steps to curtail expenses at Friends of WATS in the coming days. These are tough times that try the souls of the faintest, especially on the economic front. Yet we still believe that 2009 will be a YEAR OF MIRACLES for WATS.

Thank you for your prayers! They are our life-line!! Remember what S. D. Gordon said: "Prayer is striking the winning blow; service is gathering up the results."
