Right To Exist
"The Bible is not the basis of missions; missions is the basis of the Bible."
Ralph Winter (1925 - 2009)
"Any church that is not seriously involved in helping fulfill the Great Commission has forfeited its Biblical right to exist."
Oswald Smith (1899 - 1986)
One of the great missions leaders of our generation, Dr. Ralph Winter — founder of the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, California—passed away on May 20 this year, at 84 years of age. He probably did more than anyone else in our generation to accelerate the pace of world evangelization. His Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course is today the most widely-taught missions course all over the world, and for twenty years we have taught it at WATS—both to graduate and undergraduate students.
Oswald Smith, founder of The People´s Church in Toronto, Canada, was born in 1899 and passed away in 1986. As a young man he made a destiny-shaping full consecration to God and embraced with vigor the vision of world missions. He eventually raised more funds for missions than any other person of his generation. Thank God that both of these men continue to speak to us from their graves.

Praise Notes
-
September was a great month at WATS. Masters modules led by Dr. Gary Maxey, Dr. David Seiver, Pastor Sola Ajibulu and David Adeleke ended on September 4. By September 14 thirty top church leaders arrived for a special one-week MA in Christian Leadership module postponed from July: Discipleship for the Twenty-First Century, led by Dr. U. Obed, senior pastor of Glory Tabernacle in Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr. Gwen Dewey (Bakke Graduate University) also made a great contribution by providing an unplanned all-day presentation of the BGU Theology of Work teaching to these church leaders.
-
By September 22 Jacqueline Hoover (Beirut, Lebanon), Dr. Keith Norman (Memphis, Tennessee), and Frederick Luogon (WATS lecturer from Liberia) began teaching modules respectively in History of Christian-Muslim Relationships, Hermeneutics, and Survey of Church History. Only those who come to campus can appreciate the excitement many of us feel to see what is happening through our Masters modules!
-
September 18 was a special day at WATS, with the combined annual matriculation of undergraduate students and our fourth Founder´s Day celebration. Sixty-five new students pledged their loyalty to WATS, and several speeches marked our trip down memory lane to the founding of WATS twenty years ago.
-
The biggest campus event of the month was certainly our annual Missions and Evangelism Conference. September 23 – 25 we celebrated the return of more than thirty Springboard
short-term missionaries, who travelled far and wide in June and July and returned with exciting stories of heaven´s help. On the final day the largest WATS pledge offering ever (over N950,000) was raised for sending out more missionaries for Springboard 2010. Our guest speaker was enthusiastically received as he spoke four times: Dr. William E. Flippin, senior pastor of Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church in Atlanta. With him were his son, Rev. Joseph Flippin, his executive pastor, Dr. James McWhorter, and missions personnel Ernestine Wade and Muriel Palmer. Relationships were formed that will last a lifetime. (Another "bonus" was a short visit during that week of a representative from Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta — Victor Bell — who was in Lagos to survey opportunities for Peachtree and WATS to impact the local business community.)
-
GOOD NEWS: An increasing number of WATS alumni are beginning to join the Gideon´s Army being raised to support WATS on an annual basis. We are asking God to give us at least 300 alumni who will give N10,000 or more on an ongoing annual basis. In September alumni began signing on, and many of them are giving far more than the suggested minimum. Hallelujah!! We believe this alumni goal can be met FULLY over the coming months.
-
And, finally, to the REALLY IMPORTANT NEWS (please once again pardon my crazy sense of humor here): Emma Lou and I were blessed on September 15 with our seventh grandchild: Isabella Maxey, born to Andrew and Lori Maxey, in Alabama! Congratulations!!!!!

Prayer Notes
-
Pray for strategic academic milestones in October, including mid-term exams for our undergraduates and continuing Masters modules. Kalu Okechukwu (long-time WATS teacher who is making good progress on his PhD in New Testament) will be teaching a Masters module in Greek Syntax and Grammar, and Dr. Offiong Ibok (new resident PhD on staff at WATS) will be teaching a module in Christian Ethics. Pray for these men of God!
-
Continue to pray for our long-delayed clearing of our two containers, which we expected to be out before the end of September. We are anxious to make at least one-half of our new chapel occupiable by the time of our spiritual renewal week in November. Pray for Dr. Ira Pence as he prepares to fly over and help in that process.
-
Pray for two very strategic events for which we have been preparing for many weeks:
-
October 30 we conduct a combined WATS fundraising dinner and reception for Brig. General Samuel Teidi.
This event will be conducted at This Present House, 1, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase One, in Lagos.
Pray with us that God will honor this event with His presence and excellent financial results for His glory.
-
November 9 – 15 we welcome Drs. Henry and Tom Blackaby to WATS. They will speak thrice daily in our semi-annual Spiritual Renewal week at WATS. On Saturday, November 14, they are to conduct an all-day conference for church workers at This Present House. Pray for our preparations for these important events, and for the gracious presence of God with us.
-
Finally, please once again join us to pray for the completion of our WESLEY HOUSE project. We have now completed the two-year lease on this new three-story building within a short walk of WATS, containing six four-bedroom flats. It is being dubbed "Wesley House," and will eventually hold up to forty-eight Methodist seminarians from all over Africa. Final possession is the first week of October, but we still need funds for furnishing and a stand-by generator. Pray that we will get the remaining funds QUICKLY.
