God´s Willingness
"Prayer is not conquering God´s reluctance, but taking hold of God´s willingness."
Phillips Brooks (1835-1893)
It was the Father of Modern Missions, William Carey of England and Baptist missionary to India, who first uttered the oft-quoted words,
"The future is as bright as the promises of God." One hundred years later American clergyman Phillip Brooks captured the
complimentary truth we have quoted here. In the great mystery of prayer God gives us what has been termed the "dignity of causality,"
allowing us to work with Him for the fulfillment of that which is already very much in His heart. That´s amazing. We owe a great debt
to those of you who read these lines and then turn to God in believing prayer on our behalf. God is truly listening. THANK YOU!

Praise Notes
-
Praise God for a wonderful December and for a year of progress in 2009! At the end of one year and the beginning of another our hearts are filled with both praise and great anticipation. And, . . . we owe much gratitude to many friends on both sides of the Atlantic who gave financially in December, enabling us to register our best month of the year. THANK YOU, . . . and THANK GOD!!
-
One of our greatest struggles in 2009 (and eventual triumphs) involved clearing not one but FOUR 40 ft overseas containers. Two of them went fairly smoothly, but the other two were EXTRAORDINARILY DIFFICULT. We thank God that all ended in triumph toward the end of December, with the clearing of the last one. We wish to THANK those of you who prayed with us about these needs and most of all we THANK GOD that we have sailed through with His help.
-
Praise God for the successful conclusion of another undergraduate semester in December. In addition, our Masters students were very busy.
During the first and second weeks we welcomed one of our illustrious graduates, David Jatta, director of the Great Commission Movement (aka Campus Crusade for Christ) in his native Gambia, teaching a module in World Christian Movement. Pastor Sola Ajibulu led a module in Principles of Evangelism,
Dr. Emmanuel Ogunyemi handled Educational Ministry of the Church, Kalu Okechukwu taught Mastering Biblical Greek, Dr. Ola Adeogun (LIFE Theological Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos) taught History and Criticism of the Old Testament, and Dr. David Johnston (University of Pennsylvania) took eleven students through a module in Hadith, Qur´an and Sharia. At the same time, Oumar Coulibaly´s Hebrew students continued their multi-week introduction to biblical Hebrew. WOW! Praise God for these dedicated instructors and for the many Masters students who are seeking to excel both spiritually and academically.
-
Thank God for Dr. Ira Pence (Atlanta), who traveled to WATS after Christmas to continue on into January for at least two weeks. His earlier plans to be at WATS before Christmas were delayed because of difficulties in getting all of our materials in hand for the continuing work on the chapel.
-
The presence of the WATS provost, Pastor William Udotong, was extended about ten days into December as he continued to gather research for his PhD dissertation. He was also very engaged in WATS administrative work during his time in Africa. There is unanimous praying that he will complete his academic work in record time. The entire WATS family looks forward to his full return, together with his family, in 2010.
-
Both Emma Lou and I wish to express our deep gratitude for all who prayed for us during the illness and home-going of her beloved mother, Mary Norene Zink, whose funeral was celebrated on Monday, December 7. We enjoyed much interaction with Emma Lou´s family during our ten days in Idaho, and toward the end of the month we celebrated a joyous Christmas time in Alabama with our four children, their spouses and our seven grandchildren. We are truly blessed beyond anything we remotely deserve. Thanks be to God!
-
It was a first-time experience for me this week to cross over from one year to the next several times. Tim Powell and I took off from Atlanta not long before midnight on December 31 and then chased the clock eastward (eventually through six times zones) as the New Year caught up with us, . . . at least twice, and perhaps thrice . . . high over the Atlantic Ocean. We landed happily and safely in Lagos on the afternoon of January 1. Hey, it´s great to start 2010 in a wonderful place called NIGERIA (recent international rumblings notwithstanding). It´s absolutely AWESOME to be right in the center of God´s will. As my father-in-law used to say, "There is no promotion from the center of God´s will." I hope that´s where you are, too!

Prayer Notes
-
The first January order of business at WATS is the rush to complete our chapel flooring and to return our ground floor, disrupted offices and classrooms to service. Dr. Ira Pence and Tim Powell are working with our own Engineer A. O. Aina to see that this is accomplished. We are praying that chapel occupancy will be a reality before the end of the month. Thanks for your prayers to that end!

Masters students arrive for their first modules on Tuesday, January 5, and undergraduate students begin semester registration on Monday, January 11.
This month Dr. Offiong Ibok takes over as the Acting Director for Graduate Studies, pending the arrival later this semester of Dr. Eraste Nyirimana. In January our regular Masters modules include Christian Leadership and Church Administration, led by Dr. Emmanuel Ogunyemi; Pentateuch, with Dr. Charles Osume; Beliefs and Practices of Islam, with Ruth Veltkamp, and Apologetics for Missions, taught by Dr. Fyne Nsofor.
In January we always welcome back our top church leaders in the MA in Christian Leadership program, and again this time around we are offering four modules: Life in the Spirit, taught by Dr. Robert Lang´at (provost of Kabarak University in Nakuru, Kenya); Biblical Authority, Application and Interpretation, led by Professor Danny McCain (University of Jos); Missiology, taught by Ruth Veltkamp; and Church and Society, led by Pastor Sola Ajibulu. Please pray for these anointed teachers as they lead somewhere between 100 and 150 students in these modules.
-
Please pray with us as our six-person Public Relations and Fundraising Team works hard in 2010 toward our goal of securing for WATS a steadily stronger African support base.
We are deeply convicted that the ministry of WATS in training church leaders is more urgently needed than ever. In order for it to be sustained into the future we must see more and more
Africans getting behind this ministry. Please rejoice with us that in 2009 more than N30 million (around $200,000) was raised within Nigeria! And join us in prayer that in 2010 we will see it raised to at least N50 million (around $350,000).
We know this is the direction we must go if WATS is to sustain its continuing growth.
-
Finally, pray with us for two specific related goals:
- We must find a way to replace thirty to forty student scholarships so that we do not have to send any of our students away for financial reasons. This need is urgent.
- We are trusting God to enable us to complete our chapel project (requiring an additional $32,000 [N4.8 million]) and to move forward in 2010 to construct the nine-classroom addition above our library (another $47,000 [N7 million], including the completion of our library remodeling).
God bless you as you lift up these needs in prayer, . . . and consider what else God may want you to do. Blessings on you!

Our most urgent underlying prayer continues to be for the blessing of God, the anointing of God on our teaching staff and administration, and the renewing of revival fires in the hearts of the entire WATS family. Thank you for being among those who faithfully pray and give to help us train great leaders for the bright future of the African Church. Blessings on you!!
