Rev. Benedict Bartholomew Chukwuemeka Kofi Obiako
Biography of Rev. Benedict Bartholomew Chukwuemeka Kofi Obiako
No one has been more intensely engaged or more longer engaged in the life of West Africa Theological Seminary over the past twenty years than Benedict Batholomew Chukwuemeka Kofi Obiako, known affectionately simply as Brother Kofi, and with the alias of Mallam Danjuma. He was born October 7, 1950, in Kaduna, North Central Region of Nigeria, of a Ghanaian mother and a father from Umudibia Nekede autonomous community in Owerri West Local Governing Area of Imo State.
After surviving the Nigerian civil war as a Biafran soldier, Kofi gave his life to Christ in October 1972. In his early Christian days he was discipled by Evangelist Alexander Ezeugo Ekewuba, now the Bishop of Overcomers Christian Mission. He became involved in rural evangelism with Bishop Ekewuba, Evangelist James Mbata and others. He is among the few young Christian men God used to start the Central Christian Group in Kaduna.
Later Kofi worked with United Nigerian Textile Ltd., until after receiving the call of God into full-time ministry he launched out into Christian work in 1975. As an itinerant evangelist, he worked with many groups and churches, such as the Jesus People Revolutionary Band, led by Rev. David Nzewi (the prophetic singer), Voice of the Cross (Emma and Lazarus), Mumuye Evangelistic Association (Operation Mumuye), Redeeming Time Pilgrims, and Gospel Crusaders Ministry. He was the Director of Cornerstone Gospel Messengers. Later, He was the Acting General Superintendent of the Evangelical Bible Mission, and the superintendent for the Northern District for the African Bible Church. He also served as a continental evangelist for the Pillar of Fire International.
God has blessed Kofi as a family man. For more than twenty years he has been married to his wife Dorothy, and they are blessed with six talented children.
Kofi began his Bible college studies at Calvary College of Theology, Port Harcourt, from where he graduated with his Diploma in Theology. Later he entered Wesley International Bible College, Owerri, and graduated with his Bachelor of Theology degree. He subsequently undertook Masters studies with Columbia International University of South Carolina, USA, in their MA in Mission program.
Kofi is a multi-talented man of Christian ministry, having served for many years as an evangelist, church planter, pastor, Gospel singer, missionary and teacher. He has served West Africa Theological Seminary in a multiplicity of capacities, almost too numerous to remember. He has served as Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Christian Ministries, Hausa language instructor for seven years, missions teacher, Special Assistant to the Provost, and Director for Special Duties. He was on the first Springboard mission team in 1991, as a student, and returned two more times as a staff member. He has traveled incessantly for the seminary on special assignments, including countless trips to Abuja, to Lagos (while the seminary was located in eastern Nigeria), to other far-flung destinations within Nigeria, and to Niger, Benin, Ghana, Cameroon, Liberia, Kenya and Malawi. He served as a national coordinator for the Congress on Christian Ethics in Nigeria, and is presently a member of the WATS Board of Trustees.
WATS is largely unthinkable without the presence and action of Benedict Batholomew Chukwuemeka Kofi Obiako. He is a man who never says die, who wades through every obstacle with success, who relates equally well with the high and the low in society, who speaks the three major languages of Nigeria, and who can hold forth at length on any topic of either history or current events. If we were to elect the most eligible person to be name “Mr. WATS” it would probably be none other than Benedict Batholomew Chukwuemeka Kofi Obiako. We are proud to honor him today.
